Women in Real Estate: Yael Geffen

Yael Geffen assumed the position of CEO during a company crisis which involved a highly publicised court case and placed considerable pressure on the company as a whole. She also uccessfully led the company through the Covid-19 pandemic, which was the biggest challenge ever faced by the global real estate industry.

Being the youngest and only female CEO of the top four national real estate brands, Yael has worked exceptionally hard to succeed in a male leadership-dominated environment.

Yael is proud to have been nominated for Standard Bank’s prestigious Top Woman in Property Award in 2020 and the Woman of Stature’s CEO of the Year in 2023, and to have won both titles.

Yale is a firm believer in gender diversity in senior positions in any industry, not least because the different management styles bring in new prospective and allows decision-making to become more multi-dimensional and thus more comprehensive.

She says that women CAN make a significant impact in the property sector by leveraging their unique skills, perspectives, and experiences to foster growth, innovation and positive change in the industry.

“I, more than anyone, understand how challenging and intimidating it can be to forge a career in a male-dominated field and that the women currently at the top of the industry have worked very hard to reach their goal.”

Yael’s Five Tips:

1. Networking and relationship building

Join industry groups and participate in property sector associations, women's real estate networks, and other professional organisations to connect with peers and mentors. Engage in events like conferences and workshops to expand your professional networks, gain industry insights and find collaboration opportunities.

2. Enhance Your Skills and Knowledge

Stay updated with the latest trends and best practices by enrolling in relevant courses and obtaining certifications in the relevant fields. Stay Informed by reading industry publications, following market trends and staying abreast of legal and regulatory changes impacting the property sector.

3. Advocate for Diversity and Inclusion

Promote inclusive practices by championing diversity and inclusion within your organisation and by advocating for policies and practices that support equal opportunities. Act as a mentor to other women entering the property sector, helping them to navigate challenges and advance their careers. Lead by example while being open, supportive and collaborative with others.

4. Leverage Your Unique Perspectives

Don’t underestimate the importance of being your own advocate and don’t be afraid to put yourself forward to ensure your colleagues and superiors know who you are and what you are capable of. And don’t be afraid to use your unique perspective to provide innovative solutions and approaches.

5. Demonstrate Leadership

Proactively seek leadership roles within your organisation or the industry, demonstrating your capability and commitment to making a difference. Exhibit integrity, professionalism, and a strong work ethic to inspire others and set a positive example. And always be your authentic self - it helps you to stand out from the crowd, it’s easier to build genuine relationships and gain trust and you will then be surrounded by people who want to root for you to succeed, rather than taking delight at watching you fail.
