About Milnerton
Centrally located and less congested than neighbouring Table View and Blouberg, Milnerton is an area with its own charm. It's a short distance from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, such as Sunset Beach, Dolphin Beach and Milnerton Beach, and the MyCiTi bus route goes directly through the area providing convenient transport links.
Resident Gregory Player says the cycle lane that goes all the way from Big Bay into the city centre allows you to run, Rollerblade, skateboard, cycle or bus into town at a fraction of the cost of driving. “There is also a huge industrial hub in Montague Gardens where you can get anything from beads to ice cream to homeware,” he says.
Properties are a mixed bag, and offer something for everyone. Freestanding houses come with large gardens and plots, and there are also duplexes and apartment blocks. The community works hard to keep the area safe and secure through street committees, neighbourhood watches, community policing forums and WhatsApp chat groups.
And what about the residents? “From folks that moved here in the 1920s to families building new properties on a daily basis, Milnerton is home to such a great, diverse set of people,” says Gregory. There are a host of churches for people of every denomination, and top-quality schools for all ages. “The Paddocks was recently voted one of the best shopping centres in Cape Town. Plus we have a wonderful flea market,” he says.
If you want to get outdoors you can go kiteboarding from Milnerton Lighthouse past the Winton Wreck, or partake in family beach run events in the area between March and May. These are hosted by Clean C, a local NPO that focuses on community upliftment and organising coastline cleanups.
“Milnerton is such a beautiful area with a carnival- or festival-style atmosphere as you walk around and get greeted by friendly locals and young kids playing in the streets and parks,” Gregory says.
