Craft beer connoisseurs in Joburg can hop onto a double decker bus and discover some of the best breweries in the city.
As the summer season finally begins to set in, there are few activities more attractive on a warm day than getting to try out some cold beers. With the Joburg craft beer scene having set itself apart as a worthy contender for brewing glory, craft breweries have popped up all over the city over the past few years, making it the perfect place to discover your favourite new ale or lager. And if you’re having trouble getting to all the breweries in one day (perhaps you love a challenge) then Take You There has you covered.
In 2012, Take You There Party Bus Company saw a gap in the market and decided to launch South Africa’s original craft brewery beer tour in conjunction with Copperlake Breweries. With the view of taking craft beer lovers on a provincial adventure every six weeks, the original brewery tour journeyed around Joburg North in a double-decker party bus to explore four craft beer breweries. Fast-forward four years and, although there is still evidence of the original tour (the tours still take place on a customised double-decker bus, complete with complimentary Copperlake draughts on board), the tour has been streamlined to include more beer tastings, but at fewer breweries. Named the #Megabeertour, you’re guaranteed the chance to try at least 18 beers throughout the day, which is no small feat.
If the #Megabeertour seems a little intimidating, Take You There has a smaller option that’s more chilled: the #Jozibeertour. Visiting Brewhogs brewery in Kyalami, Two Okes Brewery in Krugersdorp, and Copperlake Brewpub in Broadacres, you’ll have the chance to taste all the delicious beers at these specials spots, plus a light lunch at the end. But don’t worry, as with all Take You There beer brewery tours, you’ll still be transported on the open top bus with beer taps on board offering Copperlake brews.
With the chance to see the entire brewing process from grass to glass, including meeting the brewmasters and learning about the art of fermentation, there’s really no better way to enjoy and appreciate beer than on a beer tour.
