Illovo’s favourite restaurants return

Two of Joburg’s best restaurants return under new management with new vibes and improved menus.

Food lovers, rejoice! Illovo’s cheekiest residents, Wolves and The Good Luck Club, are under new management and have had the nip and tuck that their long-time fans have been eagerly awaiting. Having recently reopened, these two Joburg favourites are back with all their popular classics and a few more tricks up their sleeves.

The ultimate destination for those looking to impress a date or have a great night out with friends, before moving on to some of Illovo’s later haunts, Wolves and The Good Luck Club quickly became known for their quirky decor and strong sense of individuality, despite being owned by the same team and sharing an inter-leading door.

During the day, Wolves is the place to be seen. With free Wi-Fi, delicious coffee, tasty burgers and enough cake to make you never want to leave, it’s a haven for weary travellers or hard-working freelancers who need a break from their apartments. Chilled, but with a distinctly fun feel, Wolves became known as an ideal spot for a casual meeting or coffee with a friend.

The revamp has done away with the older decor items, but the fresh blue paint and monthly local print exhibitions still ensure that the beloved Wolves vibe remains, and, as always, if a piece of art catches your eye, you can order a print right then and there. This ever-changing wall display, combined with the incredible new Chomp cronuts with caramel chocolate filling, means that Wolves should move right back up to the top of your list of favourite spots in Joburg.

Not to be outdone by its quirky little sister, The Good Luck Club next door has also undergone an impressive facelift. The infamous cat-in-a-top-hat wallpaper has been replaced with tropical ferns that take the dim sum and noodle destination to a new level of chic. This is complemented by the dark wood and crates of fresh herbs outside. Warm, welcoming, and with all the menu favourites still intact (think twice-fried beef, and dim sum), it’s time to fall in love with The Good Luck Club all over again.

Sandton is a vibrant, modern neighbourhood that contains the richest square mile in Africa. It is the business gateway into Africa for many large corporations and attracts thousands of ambitious people seeking their fortunes. But Sandton is not just about big business, residents find plenty of time for leisure too. World class shopping centres, and a buzzing social scene are a huge hit with the young and young at heart. Perhaps surprisingly, there is a huge amount of green space in the area that residents take advantage of to exercise or just take a breather.
