Grab a mouth-full at Gibson’s

With over 40 burgers on the menu, Gibson’s is guaranteed to satisfy any appetite. Check out their new location at Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre.

Previously found inside the V&A Waterfront, it used to be quite a mission to get a seat at Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs, so it was about time it moved to a more spacious location. In its new location, at the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre, this popular eatery seats 71 inside and 120 outside, so it’s easy to grab a table, and the stylish decor by award-winning designer Adam Court is sure to give you something to talk about.

On the new look, Ian Halfon – co-director with Doron Duveen of the Slick Restaurant Group – who own Gibson’s as well as Belthazar and Balducci at the V&A Waterfront, and Auberge Daniella B&B in Franschhoek, says, “We wanted something fresh, funky and very different. We wanted the kitchen as open plan as possible. The toilets are also a design masterpiece, not to mention the beautiful alfresco terrace.”

The eatery has also increased its offering to 40 burgers – including beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian and Banting options. There are now over 100 different flavours of Gourmet Shakes and there’s even a new mega milkshake mania – the giant 850ml Freek Shakes jam-packed with indulgent treats. “They’re extremely popular, and we get rave reviews on TripAdvisor,” says Ian.

We went to Gibson’s around 1pm on a Sunday – those who have dared visit the V&A Waterfront during this time (especially when the sun is out) know how packed the restaurants can get and how the service can be a bit slow. However, we were really impressed with how efficient the service was and how hands-on the managers were at Gibson’s.

With 40 burgers, it was difficult to choose, but we eventually decided on the Governor’s De-Luxe with five toppings (beef patty smothered in bar-b-que sauce, topped with cheese, bacon, guacamole and sweet mustard) and the Mex-Tex (beef patty topped with cheese, jalapeno and guacamole served with nachos, salsa and sour cream). These monsters are best devoured with both hands, so don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. It may get messy, but it’s completely worth it.

“Made from grain-fed beef, our juicy 200g burgers – we don’t use egg or any binders, just pure beef with a small natural fat content – are flame-grilled to perfection with lashings of our best-kept-secret basting, and then lovingly placed on a home-baked, lightly toasted sesame seed bun. The bun is freshly baked daily using only natural ingredients,” adds Ian.

For efficient and friendly service, juicy burgers and delicious shakes – Gibson’s is the place to visit.
