Established in 1997 by a group of concerned teachers and parents, Cannons Creek was founded with the view to providing excellent quality education to ensure the fulfilment of every learner’s full potential. In keeping with this, the school has moved from strength to strength, retaining its founding standards - keeping classes small under the tutelage of experienced and dedicated teachers, who are specialists in their field.
Committed to the education of learners from Grade RR to Matric, the staff body approaches their work with passion and professionalism in their endeavour to produce confident, trustworthy and able individuals. Small classes make for individual attention, and the needs of each learner are determined through regular assessment. Cannons Creek strives for academic excellence by providing a happy, stress-free learning environment, where learners are encouraged to achieve and sustain their best. This is nurtured by sound academic input, excursions, as well as cultural, social and service activities.
Cannons Creek is involved in a number of outreach programmes. As these are not extra-mural, they form an integral part of the school itself. In the belief that success without empathy is hollow, the Cannons Creek High School’s commitment to those less fortunate is evident in their outreach projects, and all High School students are encouraged to participate in one or more of the initiatives offered by the school. They are actively involved with two homes for HIV/AIDS orphans in providing goods, time and care. In addition to this, learners bring a sandwich a week to feed disadvantaged children through the ‘Bread Buddies’ project. In addition to this, learners arrange a charity drive during their Grade 10 year, and the Job Shadow project requires students to shadow an NGO at least once out of four opportunities.
The Primary School is mainly involved in collecting blankets, clothes, toys and Christmas presents throughout the year for the ‘Home from Home’ project, as well as collecting items to sell at the St Luke’s Hospice shop and raising money for lights to decorate the Hospice Christmas tree. Other charities the students are involved in include The Guide Dog Association, Sunflower Foundation, Red Cross Children’s Hospital, Bread Buddies, Maitland Garden Village School and Mountain View Educational Centre.
Cannons Creek offers a number of age-appropriate extra-mural activities. At foundation phase level, these include activities that give children an introduction to sports whilst developing fundamental physical and life skills. Older learners are given the choice of the full spectrum of sporting activities, as well as a range of clubs and societies, catering for every personality. The superior quality of coaching available at the school is evident in the number of provincial and national representatives amongst current learners and past pupils of the school. These success stories range from equestrian events, fly fishing, sailing and golf to ice skating, hockey, tennis and soft ball.
The result of an education at Cannon Creek Independent School is a well-rounded and adjusted individual. The knowledge, values and plethora of skills imparted during the years at the school will stand any learner in good stead, and give them the ability to confront all of life’s challenges and triumph in all of its opportunities.
