Athlone Girls’ High provides learners with a range of enriching events and activities to complement their academic lives, aid them in building confidence, and endow them with proficiency in a number of areas. This includes a Pastel Accounting Course, involvement in the City Wide High Schools Business Plan Competition and the Civic Voices Project. In addition to this, and as many of the school’s learners come from disadvantaged environments, Athlone offers a number of in-house activities to further expand opportunities to its girls. This includes participation in the provincial schools’ UN Debate, the KPMG Sanlam Entrepreneurial Development Programme, and the prevalence of Service Ambassadors in the school who play a pivotal mentorship role and are proud representatives of the school and its ethos. These events run concurrently with the school’s involvement in the Johannesburg Junior Council, the Johannesburg Student Council and the GIBS Spirit of Youth Programme to name a few.
The sporting and cultural extra-mural offerings at Athlone Girls’ High complement the development of learners beyond the classroom. With girls actively participating in soccer, hockey, netball, athletics, basketball, netball and tennis, the school’s sporting representatives continuously bring added pride to the school. In addition to this, the school choir is held in tremendously high esteem and has been ranked in first place at district level over the years.
Both within the classroom and from an extra-mural standpoint, the Dramatic Arts at Athlone Girls’ High has become part of the school’s tradition. As a form of cultural and personal expression, the girls participate in a number of Drama opportunities at a number of levels.
