Located in Jan van Riebeeck Street near the railway station in Pretoria North, Assumption Convent Primary School has offered excellent education to learners since 1952. Catering for Grades 000 through to 7, the school consists of two double storey buildings with fourteen classrooms, media centre, state-of-the-art computer centre, admin offices and staffroom. In addition to this, there are prefab outbuildings that house the art centre and music block, as well as a brick building that is home to the pre-primary school and sick bay. All classrooms are air-conditioned for the comfort of the learners and teachers. The primary principles that Assumption Convent strives to convey to its pupils are those that denote good character namely trustworthiness, responsibility, caring, respect, fairness and good citizenship. This is firmly built into the ethos of the school and the success of its application is evident from the fact that, in 2007, the school won the You/Huisgenoot prize for the school with the best character in a national competition. Assumption is also proud to be the first school in Gauteng to become an affiliated member of the Ethics and Leadership Institute of South Africa. The academic results obtained at Assumption Convent are well above the provincial average each year. This can be attributed to the individual attention afforded by smaller classes as well as to a staff body dedicated to the finest levels of education. Grades 1 to 7 also undergo weekly computer training, which develops vital, fundamental computer and internet skills at a foundation level. As a part of these lessons, the learners also use Language and Mathematics programmes. This helps them to fine tune these pivotal learning areas, noticeably improving their marks and giving them a thorough basis of understanding in order for them to successfully tackle future years of study in those areas. In keeping with its Catholic establishment, Assumption Convent offers education centred around the Catholic faith. As such, the school prides itself on the moral fibre of the well-balanced individuals that emerge to undertake high school study from the convent. The principles and longstanding values of the school are built into its ethos and into the activities that are enjoyed by the pupils on a daily basis, making them an ideology to live by in the students’ future endeavours. Learners from diverse backgrounds are welcome within the school, as the value of each individual underpins the daily working of the school. This inclusive attitude extends to the sports field. A variety of extramural activities are available to the students, both sporting and cultural. Within their participation in these activities, and as their talents are identified and put into practice, the focus is placed more on the spirit of co-operation than competition. It is often in their after hour pursuits that the most pertinent life skills are conveyed, and Assumption Convent conveys these sensitively and with lasting effect. The school also offers a premium after care facility, with adult supervision of homework and where the pupils can enjoy a full lunch after school. The pre-primary school facility at Assumption Convent caters for Grade R as well as Grades 00 and 000. This facet of the school is nurtured as fundamental in preparing children for their first forays into the education, and the needs of these learners are fostered from grassroots level by highly skilled and experienced teachers at this level. Assumption Convent also has a multi-disciplinary support team available to parents and students consisting of an occupational therapist, speech therapist, remedial therapist, educational psychologist, psychiatrist and social worker. This team of specialists aim to identify learners with problems as soon as possible and provide on-going top professional support in order to remedy any problems identified. It is through this support that the learner and the learner’s family is equipped to cope with mainstream education and achieve within that system.
