Benoni was originally a mining town, and the mines and supporting businesses attracted people from all over the world. This played a big part in the area being as diverse as it is today. Benoni is a picturesque setting for families with its attractive tree lined suburban streets. For those that are interested in all things equestrian, Benoni has many horse stables and riding facilities. Residents like to refer to Benoni as the "City of Lakes" with 4 scenic lakes dotted around the area.

Locals can visit the Lakeside Shopping Mall of Northmead Square for all their shopping needs, as well as movies and entertainment. The Benoni Art Route includes a visit to the Crucible Glass Blowing, and is a great day out for the whole family. The Acapilia Laser Clinic and Day Spa is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of life, and into a serene world of relaxation.
The Bunny Park, which is located close to the Northmead Square shopping centre, has hundreds of rabbits and small animals and is a popular venue for children's entertainment. It's a fun outing for young children from 3 - 10 years, and is one of the few places that allows visitors to feed the animals.
Visit the leading country club on the East Rand, Benoni Country Club, which offers not only a golfers experience, but also tennis, squash and bowls. Situated in quiet, leafy surrounds, the course is set on large, scenic grounds in which springbok, blesbok, duiker and steenbok can be seen. Benoni is known particularly for golf but soccer, rugby, tennis, cricket and swimming facilities are all available in this neighbourhood.
There are many schools in Benoni and in some areas there is a concentration of up to 6000 students within a 5 km radius. The schools in this neighbourhood include such institutions as Benoni High School, Ashton International College and Rynfield Primary School.
