Traditionally known as the holiday side of town, Voëlklip was developed as a holiday-home suburb because of its proximity to the beaches of Hermanus. It was named after a large rocky outcrop that is normally covered in gulls and cormorants off Voëlklip Beach.

From a few holiday cottages close to the beach it has grown to a bustling suburb of lock-up-and-go properties interspersed lately with residential homes and spacious guest houses.
