Shumani Nature Reserve is a haven of natural beauty, situated within a pristine forest that offers captivating sea and river views. The property encompasses the scenic Gxulu valley and is perched on 31 hectares of indigenous bush, bordered by the Gxulu River on one side, the Fort Pato Road on the other, and traversed by a few streams which are wonderful to explore. The biodiversity of the area means there are over 200 bird species to look out for. In addition to birdwatching from one of five properties, the river or the beach, there are also a few walking trails through the forest: four kilometres of paths through the forest and to the valley can be used to exercise as well as the abutting farm roads. There is a beautifully cleared picnic area on the river where one can relax, watch birds and go canoeing. When the river mouth is closed, it is a worthwhile experience canoeing to the beach to enjoy the silence of the ravine or take a walk along the beach and forage for oysters, mussels, or just generally just beach combe. At night the sky is alive with stars, especially spectacular with the limited artificial light in Gxulu.

The reserve has a rich biodiversity. The commitment to conservation is evident through an ongoing alien removal and reforestation program, reinforcing its status as a protected environment accredited by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) biodiversity stewardship program. Soon to be gazetted as a nature reserve, Shumani unveils many treasures, including yellow wood trees, orchids, nesting crown eagles, meandering dry riverbeds and streams and a breeding pair of Fish eagles. Beyond its natural beauty, Shumani is a self-sustaining reserve, relying on rainwater and solar power to fuel its essential amenities, including water, refrigeration, Wi-Fi, lights, and power points.

The main house exemplifies sophistication and modernity, boasting four bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. The expansive kitchen, walk-in pantry, and boot/storeroom complemented by a smaller kitchen provide ample space for culinary pursuits. Additional amenities include guest toilets, two lounges, two studies, a linen room, and three garages. The house is thoughtfully designed, with half of it potentially functioning as a separate, fully self-sufficient flat with its own entrance or in its entirety a magnificent u-shaped house. The terraced and landscaped garden, another scenic picnic spot, undercover braai area with a dining space, three patios, and a central quad with a pristine pool enhance the living experience, offering magnificent views of the sea, river, and forest.

On the reserve there are two income-generating charming cottages, each with one double bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan living area. These attractively decorated cottages offer majestic views of the river, sea, and surrounding natural forest, making Shumani Nature Reserve a true sanctuary for both nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat.

In addition to the main house and charming cottages, Shumani Nature Reserve has a dedicated manager''s residence, further enhancing its allure. This residence features two en-suite bedrooms that provide a private and serene space for the manager or another income-generating house. The accompanying workshop reflects the practicality of the property. The adjoining storeroom adds to the convenience, ensuring that resources and supplies are easily accessible for the smooth management of the reserve. It also has a bathroom. The manager''s residence complements the overall infrastructure of the reserve, contributing to the seamless integration of human habitation with the surrounding natural beauty and the opportunity to generate income.

The reservoir feeds the main house and holds 100 000 litres of water and there are 25 000 litres of tank water. The cottages are on their own circuit and self sufficient.
