Luxurious bedrooms without blowing the budget

A bedroom does not need to be purely reserved for sleep. It can be a sanctuary, a place where you can be alone, to contemplate, to read, or simply enjoy peace and quiet. When entering your bedroom you should feel tension leaving your body, and if you don’t, it’s possible that an update may help.

Bedroom transformations do not need to be overly grand, not do they have to be expensive; they can be as simple as changing the paint colour or the bed clothing. However, everyone deserves a bit of luxury, even on a budget, so it makes sense to transform your bedroom into a retreat, possibly reminiscent of a 5-star resort or luxurious hotel bedroom, which usually includes lavish fabrics, metallics, and unexpected accessories.

There are relatively easy and cost-effective ways to achieve a glamorous bedroom, even on a budget. It’s always recommended that you start by finding a picture of a room you love, and mimicking it.

Colour

Neutral colours tend to give off a rich, classic and lux feel, however, do not use white as a base as it can make a room feel cold. Rather choose ivory, cream or light beige.

If you prefer deeper tones, consider a one wall backdrop, using colours like wine, jade, and navy as these tend to add warmth when partnered with the right accessories.

Another idea is to choose a theme, such as seaside, bush lodge, or art deco grand.

Wallpaper

This is a trend that is being picked up, and if going for the luxury look, textured wallpaper as a backdrop to the headboard wall can be an effective way to create a major focal point. Wallpapering just one wall is very cost effective, and the drama of the pattern can be reflected in your choice of accessories.

Busy patterns are not recommended across all rooms, as these can tend to dominate and make you feel stressed.

Bed-dressing

Mixing patterns, palettes, and textures presents a dynamic five-star presentation. Look for bedding that matches as closely as possible to, or possibly contrasts with, the main colour or wallpaper on the walls. If you have used neutrals for example, stick to the same tones that work well together, eg: cream sheets, and a plain duvet cover. The drama will come from scatter cushions and bed throws. Opt for a fur or faux blanket that adds an element of texture, and silk which reflects light. Both of these textures are known for presenting a lavish look.

Layering is a big part of the lux look. Overlaying blankets that are texturally different but complementary are a big trend, and who says you have to place the blanket at the bottom of the bed? You can place it just below the pillows for a very contemporary feel.

Curtains

Curtains should be hung properly as they immediately provide an expensive effect. The general rule is to have the bottom of the curtains skirt the floor without touching it, nor leaving too big a gap. Raise your curtain rod to the ceiling to create the illusion of longer walls.

Using existing items

If you have a headboard or lamps, for example, but they are outdated or don’t match the new colour scheme, consider updating them with paint or new fabric. Wooden framed headboards can also be updated by adding padding, which you may attempt to do yourself using resource guides from the internet. Also consider exploring whether you can create a supersized headboard, which adds drama.

Lampshades are relatively simply to update if they are fabric based, as all you need is some glue and fabric. If making your own cushion covers, consider putting the same fabric on your lampshades for a subtle co-ordinated effect.

Finishing touches

Try not to over-design by using too many pieces. This includes the walls. The idea is to keep the walls as under-crowded as possible so your eyes are not constantly moving around. Use artworks that are simple; perhaps a series where the frames are all the same.

Position mirrors in places that can reflect light, and don’t use too many. One or two in strategic places are enough. Use simple decor pieces, like groupings of vases that are plain but when positioned together create an understated elegance. Consider a seating area at the bottom of the bed … a great place to remove shoes or place your outfit for the day.

Rugs are also a wonderful way to bring texture to a room, however, the same rule applies in that you keep them tonally matched to other items in the room.

Shop for less

A real saver is to shop at thrift shops. Choices can be unlimited, and you may even find bargains on pieces that have antique value. Lamps and even fabric swatches can be a real find in secondhand shops. Also see ‘beyond’ the colours of a piece you like. A vase for example, could be painted, and lampshades, as mentioned, can be recovered.

And don’t forget to explore your parent’s and grandparent’s throw-aways. Engage your creativity; a bit of paint here or there, or an embellishment or two can completely transform an old-fashioned item into something contemporary and refreshing.
