The bathrooms are finally revealed! Will the judges find the Duos' designs steaming hot or will this bathroom challenge get a tepid response?
The Design Duos bravely met the bathroom challenge head on and managed to keep the double project on track. On the final day, the Eye of Africa Estate was a flurry of activity as lighting and sanitary-ware was installed.
Team Habitat decided to have one signature piece in their master en-suite: Another "bling" chandelier. Megan Schumann from Caesarstone visited the site to check on the installation of stone slabs in the shower as well as their custom vanity. She also paid a visit to Team House and Leisure to have a look at their stone clad planter box.
Over at Team VISI's house, the installation of their Geberit products, including toilets shower channels and a mirror cabinet, kicked up a lot of dust and Mpho and Lesego quickly rolled up their sleeves to give the bathrooms a thorough clean.
By the time deadline was called, all the bathrooms were quite literally done and dusted.
Having worked twice as hard in this challenge, the design duos deserved a little reward and they were generously gifted custom made bathrobes by Grohe to match their master bathroom design.
Finally, it was time for the judges to arrive. For this challenge, the guest judge was renowned local interior designer Buzwe Mabuza, founder of Design Dreams International. Buzwe has worked with international clientele is responsible for some of the country's most stylish residential and business interiors.
Team VISI's master bathroom was revealed to be a modern interpretation of a black, white and grey palette. They drew inspiration from a marble tile and used that look on the floors, in the shower and halfway up the walls. The remaining wall surface was painted in a Plascon shade called "Moth Mist". The bathroom design focused on very sleek finishes to give it a luxurious feel.
By contrast, Team VISI's guest bathroom had a much more feminine feel with a neutral floor and tiles, soft green walls and accessories in blush pink. Their feature in the guest bathroom was a towel rack made of Caesarstone.
The judges really enjoyed the sophistication of the master bathroom and found little fault with the design. However, they did feel there was a disconnect between the two bathrooms and the guest bathroom lacked attention to detail.
Team House and Leisure's master en-suite immediately grabbed the judges attention with it's open plan design and the planter box serving as the separation from the master bedroom. The design featured warm neutral colours and a custom lighting design to look like bubbles floating above the bathroom.
The guest bathroom was a continuation of the theme and colour palette of Team House and Leisure's winning guest bedroom. It featured tones of blush pink and green and a unique piece of artwork on the window blind.
The judges commended Team House and Leisure on their bold design choices and liked the forward-thinking ideas. However, they questioned the lack of privacy in the master bathroom with Katlego even referring to it as "a recipe for divorce". In the guest bathroom, the judges liked the artwork blind but didn't enjoy the number of indoor plants in the space.
Team Habitat's master bathroom was quite a change from their usual style and was much simpler and more minimalist. The colour palette was neutral and paired down for what will become "The Lion's Den" master bedroom.
In their guest bathroom, Team Habitat continued with the zebra theme from their guest bedroom in a fun tile pattern and they chose to keep up the dramatic look with a dark tile choice in the shower.
The judges liked the practicality and innovative design where Team Habitat separated the bathroom from the bedroom by only removing only a part of the dividing wall. They also commended the duo on maintaining their boldness but in a much more measured approach to give the bathroom focal points. In the guest bathroom, the judges were amused to still see the animal print signature but done in a more elegant manner with the tiling.
When the design duos gathered at Plascon Spaces for the winner announcement, Team Habitat were taken completely by surprise when they were declared the winners of the bathroom challenge. They were rewarded with an extra R3000 in their budget.
Now, Team House and Leisure will have to work hard to reclaim victory while Team VISI's sense of frustration is growing. Will they be able to maintain their confidence if they don't win the next challenge?
