After 40 years in the same house, Wolfgang is ready to sell up and move on. His outdated house is, however, turning buyers off.
This week on Vat Jou Goed en Trek, the team meet homeowner Wolfgang, who has lived in his Centurion property for more than 40 years. His 5-bedroom house is too big for him now and he is he is looking to downsize.
Henck calls in the help of real-estate agent Gavin Bampton from Aida and his expert team to tackle the home renovation project. The first point of concern is the outdated 1970’s kitchen which interrupts the flow from the kitchen to the living room. Gavin suggests that it be replaced.
In the living room is another relic from the 70’s – face brick feature walls that is putting potential buyers off. The spare bedroom has been used to keep the family’s pets, including a snake and spider. Apart from the scary creatures, the bedroom also looks terrifying with old carpets and the incorrect use of colour on the ceiling and cupboard doors.
Work begins
The following day Henck arrives at the construction site and finds Lara in the kitchen. Lara is stoked with the splash-backs she chose for the kitchen but Henck is concerned that her chosen colour scheme is too neutral. He insists that she brings in more colour.
Callie decided to go for a white wash effect on the kitchen cupboards. By applying the paint technique, he shows that you don't have to break the bank in order to modernize an old kitchen. He also replaces the tired kitchen counter tops with new modern glossy ones, and refits the kitchen door handles.
Lara follows Henck's advise and paints the two face brick feature walls. One in the dining room and another in the living room.
The big reveal
It’s now time for the big reveal and Wolf is left speechless by the work done.
The outdated face-brick walls have been painted in a light duck-egg green colour. The colour is true to the 70's style architecture but gives it a modern twist. Other changes included repainting the walls, putting up of cornices and installing downlights.
The kitchen shows a vast improvement. They have opened it up by taking down cupboards that were restricting the open-plan view to the living room. The outdated kitchen wall tiles were painted in a light grey colour that tied in with the white-washed cupboard doors. Decorative splashback tiles were installed to tie the kitchen in with the feature walls in the dining and living room area.
In the bedroom, laminated floors were installed, the ugly red cornices were replaced with white modern ones, the doors were painted in a modern grey colour and doors were repurposed as headboards.
Gavin shows the property to potential buyers and he shows Wolf their reactions. The buyers’ like the size of the property, the openness of the kitchen and the modern feature walls. All in all, the reactions are positive and it looks like Wolf will be able to move very soon.
