Episode 17: How to prepare for the stressful task of moving home.

Get expert advice from a moving company on how to be prepared for the stressful task of moving home.

Presenter: Thank you, Mark for showing us all of your coolest hangout spots. And you know what? From going to hangout spots to buying a home, we know that it can be incredibly exciting. But moving home has scientifically been proven as one of the top three most stressful situations one can experience, and this is why you can make use of a professional moving company and literally take the load off your shoulders as you get ready for your new home.

Packing up and moving home can be one of the most stressful activities. But planning ahead and finding the right people for the job will make sure that your valuable goods arrive at your new home in the exact same condition that you left them and will set your mind at ease. No matter the size of your home, a professional removals company like Stuttaford Van Lines can customize their services to your needs and offer great expertise on how to make moving easier.

I think for a lot of people moving home can be a rather big stress, but knowing where to start is a problem.

Rocco Olivier: The three boxes to tick for when you're moving would be to ensure that you check that a company has reliable vehicles. Often you read in the papers of unreliable vehicles being on our roads. The second box that they should tick, they should check their company's financial status to make sure that they're qualified to kind of follow through on the move. The third box would be staff. And I think that is essential. We want to make sure that the people we allow into our house are vetted and accredited and of quality and staff that knows what they're doing. And so it is essential that you tick those three items with your removal company to make sure that they comply.

And how important is it that your goods are packed correctly?

Rocco Olivier: Certain moves are obviously much more complicated than others, but when you look at very specific packing materials to use on various specific items, it is essential. In over the 160 years, we've been in the business, we've obviously developed a lot of items that's very suitable for moving home. We've got hang boxes that are designed where you can hang your clothes in the box. Crates are being built for pianos, upright baby pianos, grand pianos. So we measure the items. We pack the item with layers of corrugation, allows the item to sweat and breathe because in the trucks and on the containers it gets quite hot, there's movement the whole time, so it is really essential to use quality double-corrugated packing material. You pay for your volume. And the less volume you could have the better you'll be off. The packers are really very, very sensitive about saving the client the volume and the space.

Stuttaford Van Lines also offers a range of other moving services such as moving fine art pieces, pegs, and helping you move offices. They also have an affordable package for students moving from home to university.

Rocco, what are your key tips for people that are moving home?

Rocco Olivier: To prepare very well. Consider your [effects?] that you would need there in your move. You've got those items kept aside because on pack out day it happens so quickly, and the guys know what's going so they start packing. Also, on valuables, make sure that your cell phones, your laptops, those items are not covered in insurance, so we don't move that items in the trucks. Keep that aside, lock it up, that that will be for you to move. Then people often have the scenario where, "We're not going to move that. We're not going to pay for that item. It's costing us a fortune. We just want to get rid of that." We've got a separate inventory list. If there's any such items at the house, the client is happy to fill in which items he'd like to donate, and we then, on behalf of the client, take it to childline, which they normally send an email and say, "Thank you very much Mr. so and so for your donation. It's really appreciated." Often people think, "I can do a little bit. Let me start packing some items." Let the removal company take over. Also, for insurance reasons, owner-packed boxes would not be covered with insurance. So avoid packing any items yourself. Leave it for the professionals.

By enlisting the help of the pros with packing and moving your precious belongings, unpacking will be a breeze, and you can quickly settle in and enjoy your new home.
