There are some inspirational winter trends we can all embrace and easily introduce into our homes this winter. Not only will they warm our homes up, but also add energy and increase our happiness.
1. Neutrals and Hygge
Winter is the perfect time to bring some Hygge touches into your home. Hygge is a Norwegian word that means well-being. A way of life and Danish culture, where you appreciate what you have and importance is placed on the simple pleasures of life. No matter the size, your home should be a place where you can wind down, disconnect and read a book in your comfy wear, but also a friendly and welcoming home to invite friends over for a hearty home cooked meal. (In SA, I guess a braai would be Hygge!)
You can easily introduce these Hygge touches into your home this winter.
Calm colours: Neutrals
Lots of candles to create a cosy atmosphere.
Snug bedding
Treat yourself - drinking hot chocolate is Hygge!
2. Spicy Colours
It goes without saying you can add some heat to your home with these beautiful spicy colours.
Michele Throssell, one of South Africa's top interior designers mentioned she had seen a velvet couch by Weylands at Design Joburg in Johannesburg and she was inspired by it for game lodges she is working on.
3. Earth Hues
Following on from spicy hues are warm tones inspired by the earth. Sun baked earth hues like Terracotta are grounding and authentic.
We mentioned Terracotta in our trend post in Jan. It is great to see this warm welcoming colour come through in fashion and interior design. Terracotta is also a great way to introduce warmth to a black and white scheme. Think of introducing terracotta tiles or terracotta pots.
Whether it is a feature wall or a new way of colour blocking - colour bands, as seen in the image below, terracotta will add warmth and interest. Be sure to balance warm schemes with some cooler colours in your accessories, like scatter cushions and artwork.
4. Grey Greens
Deep blues and greens are here to stay, but the deep grey greens are a great alternative to grey this winter. Green is calming both mentally and physically, it also connects us to nature. These positive qualities make it the ideal colour to bring into your home or office in some way. Whether you paint your walls with it, bring plants into your living or working environment and let's face it - even eating more greens is good for you.
5. Yellow Gold
Yellow is one of the most uplifting colours in the spectrum - it is warm, energetic and brings a sense of optimism and cheerfulness to a space. Yellow is also the colour of hope. With all these qualities to offer, yellow is the ideal colour to introduce into your home this winter.
During Milan week Italian designer Matteo Zorzenoni created 7 sets to show off his designs, one in a beautiful luminous yellow.
We are often drawn to colours that we need to balance us, for instance we may crave green when we are stressed out or red when we have no energy. Pay attention to your feelings and what colours you are drawn to then find your inspiration and you will have a winning formula.
