Mixing black and white in just the right way, can create a stylish look for your home.
An all white scheme can be cold and isolating, too much black can be dark and depressing. But, when you mix dark and light just right, you can create a contemporary high-design look without breaking the bank.
This unique and contemporary beach house provides some inspiration on using a black and white scheme and getting the balance just right.
Exterior
The trick to using black on the exterior of a home is to make sure it blends into the environment, use together with natural wood, greenery and stone to achieve this.
The black walls of this beach house are hardly noticeable when combined with the lighter natural wood and stone clad walls. The wood and stone add a natural element and warmth to the cool and grounding black. The modern black shutters open up to give the home depth and dimension. Rather than stark white, a light grey was used on the roof.
Window frames
The black window frames fade into the background and provide the perfect frame for the beautiful sea views - it's almost like looking though a camera lens.
Small Spaces
Don't feel you need to paint small spaces a light colour so they will appear larger. You can create something really interesting and fun by painting small spaces in a dark colour. The black walls in the guest loo create a trendy and designer look and feel.
Living area
Black can be a very difficult colour to spend a lot of time in, so beware of using too much black in spaces like the living room. Rather stick to an off-white for the walls in the living area and add black furniture and accessories. Once again, the addition of natural wood creates a warm and cosy feel.
