A growing trend in society is home gardens. More people are becoming interested in taking control of their diets and health, and this includes growing their own produce. If you’re looking to start your own vegetable garden and are unsure of where to start, consider planting any one of the following 10 delicious vegetables which are also fairly easy to grow:
1. Tomatoes
Although tomatoes are scientifically considered fruits, for the sake of convention and understanding, they will be classified as vegetables in this article. Tomatoes need fertile soil that is well-drained to grow as well as a lot of sunlight.
To help your tomatoes grow well, poke a wooden stake in the ground. This will support its structure and also prevent losses and rot.
2. Carrots
Carrots are fairly easy to grow in your vegetable garden. They grow quite well when exposed to full sun and soil that is free of stones and other debris. The soil should be sandy loam that is well-drained. If the soil is too heavy, it will cause the carrots to grow too quickly, which can lead to unpleasant looking and low-quality roots.
3. Spinach
Spinach grows quite quickly, taking an average of 6 weeks to reach harvest from when the seeds are sown. This vegetable grows best in autumn and early spring. The optimum conditions for spinach to grow are well-drained light soil and sunny to partially shady conditions.
4. Green peppers
Green peppers mature in 60 to 90 days. They grow best when planted after the last frost. To ensure that they reach full maturity, you should avoid watering the peppers and only water the roots as watering the peppers will lead to rot. Green peppers do well with regular fertiliser, mulching, and staking to keep them upright. Full sun will also encourage them to grow unless the temperature is too hot, in which case partial shade would be ideal.
5. Spring onion
Spring onions grow in well-drained soil that is fertile. They take a few months to mature and need full sun in order to grow well. The best part about spring onions is that they can be grown from other spring onions. By taking the basal parts of a spring onion, you can encourage regrowth, which means you’ll never really have to buy spring onion seeds.
6. Green beans
Green beans like loam soils that are sandy and silty. However, they do grow in other types of soil as well, as long as they aren’t heavy clay. The seeds should be planted a little deep in well-drained soil. They also flourish in full daily sun and in raised beds or pots and planters.
7. Cabbage
Cabbage requires full sun in order to grow to maturity. If you’re growing cabbage, it should receive at least 6 hours of sun daily. They also grow well in fertile soil that is moist and rich with organic matter.
8. Eggplant
Eggplant grows well in warm soil, which means they need full sun to flourish. They take 100 to 120 days to reach maturity. The soil should be sandy loam that is high in organic matter.
9. Potatoes
Potatoes are such a versatile vegetable. Think about all the dishes you can make with this one vegetable… From French fries, to Shepard’s pie, to a pot roast — the list is endless!
To grow this vegetable, plant the seeds in loose soil that is well-drained and filled with organic matter. Full sun is key for their growth.
10. Pumpkin
Although pumpkins prefer full sun, they can also grow quite well in partial shade. Pumpkin requires a lot of water and the soil should be kept evenly moist.
Consider planting any one of the ten above vegetables for healthy living and delicious, easy-to-make meals.
