The Wishbone Cafe and Bistro Bar brings a stylish and modern dining experience to Sandton

There might be something nostalgic about wishing on the wishbone from your family’s roast chicken, but this new restaurant at 11 Alice Lane, Sandton is a case study in sleek modern design, inspired by the architecture that surrounds it.

The Wishbone Cafe and Bistro Bar is an eye-catching space, with a beautiful copper bar featuring exposed pipes, rotating contemporary artwork and interiors from Black Sheep Interior Design. On the day we visited, the place was packed with Sandton locals having a quick lunch, holding meetings or enjoying some time out together as a team.

Booking a table online was quick and easy, with a handy email and SMS confirmation service. Overall, table service was attentive and excellent, while all our dishes were fresh and delicious, with generous portions.

The Wishbone Cafe and Bistro Bar speciality pizza

We started with a plate of sushi, some salmon gravadlax and Vietnamese rice paper rolls with Sriracha mayo. Our mains included pork belly with pomme purée, confit duck leg, lamb shoulder and dry-aged ribeye, all done to perfection. There’s something for everyone on this menu; it features classic dishes like pizza, pasta, burgers, curries, gourmet sandwiches and seafood. For dessert, we shared a dark chocolate fondant, which was exquisitely oozy, while the crème brulée we ordered was delicious.

Owner Craigan Millar has an extensive hospitality background spanning more than two decades, and also has a love for art, design, food and wine. “It’s quite popular in European restaurants to change the artwork now and then, and given our location, I wanted to try the same concept here,” he says. Craigan has collaborated with Berman Contemporary so that the artwork is changed to feature different artists every two months.

Open Monday to Sunday and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Wishbone also features The Cognac Room, which can be used for small conferences, meetings, year-end functions and other corporate events. Set in the heart of Sandton, Wishbone is set to attract a variety of clientele whether they’re taking a break from work or shopping, or simply seeking a beautiful space in which to socialise and enjoy a mouth-watering meal.
